14th July 2005 - Free Phone Revolution This is something I became vaguely aware of last year, but I didn't realise it was now quite such a phenomenon. Skype is a simple bit of software that lets you make free calls to anyone else with the same software. And the software itself is free (though there are some paid-for add ons). Though only 2 years old, and with a staff of 160 people spread across 15 countries, Skype's software has been downloaded 134m times, there are now over 45m registered users, who have spoken for nearly 11bn minutes. And all of this with no real marketing. It goes to show that, on-line, you can give a product away and, if it's a good idea, people will adopt and embrace it. And pay for the added value add-on services. As they say about themselves: "you could think of us as the big, free Internet telephony company. We prefer to think of ourselves as a big group hug, even a present. Yes that's it we're a present but without the ribbon". To find out more, check out here: seems to be a case history presentation of some kind.
